Pattern Field Theory models identity as a continuous, self-referential process propagating through time. Under stable conditions, the identity timeline remains coherent: experience updates state, which informs narrative continuity and self-relation.

However, in conditions of extreme threat, shock, or dehumanization, the identity process may branch. This branching is not a failure. It is a survival operation: it preserves the continuity of the observing self at the cost of creating parallel identity states that cannot immediately integrate.

The question is not why fragmentation occurs. The question is why fragments do not automatically rejoin. The answer proposed here is the lack of acknowledgement, the missing return signal required for process completion.

Identity as Branching Process
